Twin Transport |

The model began life as an electric
scale free-flight model. Span is 30", area of 240 sq. inches. Motors
are 2 HiLine Mini-6 geared units. (the model was published in the
Sept. '88 Model Aviation). As a free-flight it weighed a bit over 6
ounces with a 3 x 275mah NiCd battery. It was converted to RC
originally using a 6 x 600mah NiMH pack , which weighed 2.7 ounces,
and got 10 minute flights. Gross weight had increased to over 8.5
ounces. So I then changed to a 2 cell Kokam 1100mah battery which
weighed 1.6 ounces. The resulting model weight was reduced over 1
ounce, performance picked up a bit , and flights of over 20 minutes
are now possible. |

MIG -15 |

The Mig started out as
an electric free-flight model using a homemade fan unit (published in
Jan. '95 Flying Models). It has a 24" span, and 150 sq. inches of wing
area. As a free-flight model it weighed about 5 oz. With RC added, and
a 7 x 270mah NiMH battery it grossed at 6.9 oz. It flew fine for 4 to
5 minutes. I then installed a 2x1100mah Kokam battery and saved about
10 grams. This change resulted in a slight boost in both power and
performance, and now turns in flights of 15 to 20 minutes. |

Lincoln All-Purpose |

Originally was a rubber
free-flight model, then converted to electric. free-flight . The span
is 42" and wing area 285 sq. in. It was finally modified for RC using
a 280 geared motor and employed a 7x280mah NiMH battery weighing 1.6
ounces.. Later the flight battery was changed to a 2x1100mah Kokam.
Gross weight was reduced by about a half ounce to just under 10 ounces
total. Flights of 25 to 30 minutes are possible. |

Wildcat |

The Grumman Wildcat has
a span of 32 inches and an area of 165 sq. inches. Originally, my
model weighed about 9 ounces with a GWS 180 type A geared motor and a
8 x 270mah NiMH battery. The battery was replaced with a 3 x 360mah
Kokam battery , which saved over an ounce of weight. In addition
performance is much improved and flight times of between 10 and 20
minutes are possible. |

Kyosho Flash |

My old Kyosho Flash EP
uses a new Plettenberg Freestyle XL direct drive brushless motor. I
used 4 packs of 3s Kokam 1200HC using the Parallel Connector module.
This 3s4p configuration provides the voltage of a 10-cell NiCd pack
and a total capacity of 4800mAh. My continuous current delivery can be
24amps with peak bursts up to 40amps. I used the 11.7oz Kokam pack to
replace a 10-cell, CP1700 NiCd pack that weighed 16.8oz.
I dropped 5.1 ounces and doubled my flight time using the Kokam
Lithium packs. The Flash flew great before and now I can actually
practice circuit aerobatics for a reasonble length of time without
having to land just as I started having fun.

Wattage Extra 330L |

In my Wattage Extra
330L, I replaced the 8-cell Kan 950mAh NiMH pack with 2 packs of 3s
Kokam 1200HC using the Parallel Connector module.
This 3s2p configuration provides the voltage of a 10-cell NiCd pack
and a total capacity of 2400mAh. My continuous current delivery can be
12amps with peak bursts up to 20amps. Basically, I dropped 0.5 ounces,
increased my voltage, and doubled my flight time using the Kokam
Lithium packs.
The plane flew fantastic! I had plenty of vertical power and it was
the longest flight i've had on my little Extra 330L.

I used the MPI EPU3738 equivalent to the EPS-300C. It has a 3.75:1 gear ratio.
My GWS 8x6 prop drew 6.7amps with my Kokam 2s2p 1020mAh pack. This looked just
about perfect and it gave me a 2040mAh total capacity.
To mount the motor, I used a short post
stuck into the GWS gearbox and epoxied it into a tunnel I cut just under the
stock post. I also changed my ESC to a 10-amp rated device.

My AXI-powered Wipa
Firecat uses 4 packs in parallel of 3s Kokam 1200HC. The packs are
easily connected in parallel using the Kokam connector blocks. Up to
five packs can be plugged in parallel to increase capacity and current
delivery capability. You simply solder on your output wire and
connector of choice.

Lithium-powered Extra 300S |
|
The new Graupner Extra 300S was designed for glow power but
easily converts to electric flight with very few changes.
The Extra 300S has a large 63” wingspan, 46”
overall length, 639 sq. in. wing area, and is ready-to-fly at 116oz. Using Kokam
Lithium power, the flight times rival a glow-powered version.

Graupner ShowFlyer
on 40 Kokams |

The Graupner ShowFlyer is a great
flying plane! My conversion project to electric power was very
successful and it was also a great deal of fun. By providing the
ShowFlyer with a clean and quiet electric power system, I was able to
fly it just down the street from my home. The advantage of not using a
glow engine will allow me to increase my practice time, since I can
fly it more often, and learn some new 3D maneuvers. The 7.5AH capacity
Kokam pack provides long flight times!
