Basic engine setup can be done in the following manner once the engine has been
run-in. With the correct fuel, glow plug, and prop the engine is started and run
up to high RPM for a couple minutes to warm up the engine. With the engine
running at high RPM begin adjusting the high end needle valve to reach smooth
running.
At this point slowly throttle down to a low RPM level. The engine will start to
run rough with an uneven beat and with raw fuel coming out of the exhaust if
there’s no exhaust throttle.
Set the idle screw as to have the barrel as far
closed as you can while keeping the engine running slow and open the air bleed
screw and observe the engine speed up slightly as the fuel mixture improves.
Reset the idle stop screw a bit and open the air bleed screw a bit more. You can’t
go too far in trying to slow the running of the engine, of course, but it should be
able to maintain running slow for several minutes.
If you open the throttle quickly to the full speed position the engine should rev-
up without allot of sputtering and heavy exhaust smoke. It you do observe
these things then the engine idle is still set too rich.
‘till next time... Keep Em Flying!
